KATHY SHIPLETI am a full time clay artist living in the mountains of New Mexico. I am a native New Mexican, and I’m inspired by my surroundings. I have been "playing in clay" since I was a child. I continued my passion and attended UNM and studied clay. I also studied (and practiced, and practiced...) under various potters in New Mexico. I love living in New Mexico, and love to create work that is touched with its energy. A perfect day for me is spent in a dusty studio, with 4 Labrador Retrievers asleep underfoot! I have been a practicing my craft for over 20 years, and have sold my work in many galleries in New Mexico and Arizona. Currently I am showing my work in 3 galleries in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I also enjoy participating in our local art events!
Coil Centerpieces: Coil centerpieces are created using a hump mold that I created. Each coil is carefully placed on the hump and joined together. The piece is built up to make it substantial enough to hold its weight. After drying, the piece is bisque fired and glazed. I use high fire, food safe glaze. Still Life Plates: I throw the plate on the potter’s wheel. While the plate is drying to leather hard, I make all the individual components of the piece. I make little cactus, carve ledges and rocks, throw tiny pots and plates (using my fingers) and other details I want to add to the composition. When they are leather hard, I assemble the piece using slip, I add sand where I want a “sandy” look. After drying, the piece is bisque fired, glazed with high fire glaze. Then, the final glaze fire. The final touch is the copper wire cactus needles! Functional Work: All of my functional work is made to be used in the kitchen/bath! All the glazes I use are completely food safe. They can also be used in the oven and microwave. Each piece is made completely by hand on the potter’s wheel. I throw the piece, and then use colored slip to embellish. When the piece is leather hard, I carve out the patterns. After drying, the piece is bisque fired. The piece is glazed in high fire glaze, and fired to Cone 6. I use high fire white stoneware clay (made by NM Clay) for all my work, and high fire glaze (made by Coyote Clay and Glazes). |
