Pete EdwardsThe stenciled images in these paintings create and maintain two concurrent dialogues. The first is the interaction between the repeated stenciled images. The unity of the shapes of the stenciled images bands them together, while planned variance in color and spontaneous variances in texture and execution provide opportunity for dissimilarity and individuality. The second is the interface between the stenciled and the more painterly images as seen in the juxtaposition of the semi-industrial process of stencils and aerosol propellant with the more traditional application of paint by brush. Beyond the tension created by oppositional content in the images, this difference in technique revisits perpetual questions of old versus new, efficiency versus quality and message versus media. The ultimate goal of my work is to create images that exist on the canvas in an ever shifting state of tension and harmony. |
